Betsunate 60 Artesunate Injection IP

Description: Betsunate 60 Artesunate Injection IP contains Artesunate as the active ingredient, which is a water-soluble derivative of artemisinin, used primarily for the treatment of severe malaria. Artesunate is an antimalarial medication that works by targeting the parasite responsible for malaria, Plasmodium falciparum. It is typically used for patients who are critically ill and unable to tolerate oral medications, offering rapid action in treating malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.

Mechanism of Action: Artesunate works by damaging the malaria parasite inside red blood cells. It reacts with iron in the parasite’s food vacuole, generating highly reactive oxygen species that damage the parasite's cellular structures, ultimately leading to its death. Artesunate has a rapid onset of action, making it highly effective in treating severe forms of malaria, especially in areas with drug-resistant strains.

Indications:

  • Severe Malaria: Particularly in cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, especially for patients who are unable to take oral antimalarial drugs or have severe symptoms (e.g., cerebral malaria, severe anemia, renal failure).

  • Acute Malaria: When oral therapy is not possible or the patient requires immediate treatment.

Dosage and Administration: Betsunate 60 is typically administered by intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection, under medical supervision in a hospital setting. The usual dosing schedule is as follows:

  • Initial Dose: 2.4 mg/kg body weight administered intravenously or intramuscularly as an initial dose.

  • Subsequent Doses: After the initial dose, additional doses of 2.4 mg/kg body weight may be given 12 hours after the initial dose, and then once daily until the patient can switch to an oral antimalarial regimen.

Dosing schedules may vary based on the severity of the illness and the clinical response, so it's important to follow the physician's instructions precisely.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Pain at the injection site (if given intravenously or intramuscularly)

Serious side effects are rare but can include:

  • Severe allergic reactions: Rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.

  • Hepatotoxicity: Liver damage in rare cases.

  • Hypotension: Low blood pressure, particularly after rapid intravenous infusion.

  • Arrhythmias: Irregular heart rhythms (rare but potentially serious).

Precautions and Warnings:

  • Pregnancy: While artesunate is considered safer for use during pregnancy compared to some other antimalarials, it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  • Liver Impairment: Caution should be used when administering artesunate to individuals with liver dysfunction.

Overdose: Symptoms of overdose may include exaggerated side effects like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or hypotension. Immediate medical attention is required if an overdose is suspected.

Storage:

  • Store Betsunate 60 Artesunate Injection at room temperature (usually between 20°C to 25°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight.

  • Do not freeze the injection.

  • Keep the medication out of reach of children.
